80 Glorious Years celebrated in Plaza Birthday Year
On October the 7th 1932 a vision was born for Stockport and the North West in the form of a Super Cinema and Variety Theatre that would evoke the glamour of the era with its sumptuos surroundings, highest possible attention to detail in it's customer care and an eclectic mix of screen and stage presentation, supported by the finest cafe dining experience in the region when she opened with a charity screening of 'Jailbird' starring Laurel and Hardy and 'Out of the Blue' starring Gene Gerrard and Jessie Matthews.
80 Years on and the Plaza still hosts the biggest stage and screen presentations, welcomes guests to her sumptuous Art Deco tea rooms and plays a major part in the cultural and artistic life of the region and beyond.
In October 2012 from the 1st to the 20th, we shall be celebrating the birthday of our award winning and much loved Plaza Super Cinema and Variety Theatre with a diverse mix of shows, exhibitions and special film events, all of which show why your local Plaza is still very much at the heart of her community and will be for many more years to come.
To celebrate our 80th birthday year we commissioned our '80 Glorious Years' logo which will be emblazoned across all our events this year which include archive projects to fine out your memories of the grand lady of Mersey Square, the logo incorporating the original 'Plaza Capital P' from the opening night brochure and posters.
This logo has also been incorporated on a commemorative pin badge available for sale on our merchandise section of this web site with all proceeds going towards the ongoing maintenance and restoration appeal at the Plaza.
Keep a close eye on our 'whats on' section and join us in raising a glass to the Plaza and her 80 Glorious Years!
